The condition of stranded hippos in Bamunu Conservancy in the Zambezi Region is worsening every week. Today two Hippos died in the presence of conservancy officials and regional councilors who went there to assess the situation. The water in the pond is too shallow to cover the animals and their backs are exposed to the sun. But, the hippos are not the only animals affected by the lack of water as buffaloes and zebras are also succumbing. Some animals are being trampled to death by elephants in their search for water. So far, a buffalo calf and two zebras were victims of the trampling. Linyanti and Katima Rural Councillors Cletius Sipapela and Matengu Simushi visited the site. Sipapela noted that if the situation did not improve soon, the remaining hippos would also die. He said although the animals were territorial, there was a need to relocate them to other areas. The Councillor believes that the water, being pumped into the ponds for eight hours per day, is not a lasting solution, as hundreds of animals are drinking from the same ponds.
