It has been more than three months since Jonas Junius Jonas was arrested in Brazil. Jonas has been charged for allegedly attempting to sexually assault a Brazilian house maid at the Athletes Village in Rio de Janeiro during the Olympic games in August. The complainant claimed in her statement that the boxer had offered her money in exchange for sex, and attempted to kiss her before she fled the scene to report the incident to the police. A Brazilian Legal Act of 1992 states the definition of attempted rape or rape and sexual harassment as one and the same crime. According to a media statement released by the Namibia National Olympic Committee, the prosecution has opposed an application filed by Jonas’ legal practitioners to set aside the arrest and preliminary hearing proceedings. The application was filed based on the complainant’s own version which stated that there was no incidence of rape or attempted rape. The prosecution, has however, opposed the application for Jonas to be cleared of rape. The files are currently with the allocated judge and the parties are awaiting a decision by the judge as to how the matter will be further dealt with. Jonas is still under the care of the military attaché at the Namibian Embassy in Brazil. The NNOC confirmed that they are in touch with the Law Firm representing Jonas on a regular basis and will keep the public updated. The penalty for the offence, should Jonas be convicted, is a jail term of between six to ten years.
