The peaceful demonstration by close to 600 security guards from the Kavango East and West regions scheduled for Thursday will now take place on Monday. Marches by security guards in other towns will, however, proceed as planned. Security guards are demanding that their minimum wage at entry level be increased to 12-dollars-50 cents per hour. Organiser of the Namibia Independence Security Union for the two regions, Sakaria Haihambo, told Nampa the entry level minimum wage for security guards stands at between six-dollars-76-cents and seven-dollars per hour. Haihambo said the new wage was published in the Government Gazette and became effective two-years ago, although it was implemented since last year. The guards plan to hand over a petition to the Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment Creation Ministry. The security guards from the two Kavango regions had planned a peaceful demonstration last month, but it was called off at the last minute. Three unions representing over 15-thousand security guards across the country reiterated at a media briefing two-days ago, that the planned action was a peaceful demonstration and not a strike.
