People with disabilities resent most of the ways in which they are referred to in the media. Deputy Minister of Disability Affairs, Alexia Ncube, told a media briefing in Windhoek on Tuesday that they dislike being called: the disabled, the blind, the handicapped, crippled; or wheelchair-bound. They also do not want to be labeled as, ‘people living with disabilities’. But they say to be called, ‘people with disabilities’ is OK. The minister specifically called the media briefing to inform the public that persons with disability do not want their human rights violated in the manner they are addressed. She said the ministry was working on a document that would help guide others in ensuring that this sector of the community is referred to in public, in respectful terms, which they would approve of. Letitia Bouwer also addressed the press briefing, she is visually impaired and says she suffers insults when she goes shopping with her guide dog, Nathan. The Deputy Minister, who uses a wheelchair herself, says chasing away a guide dog is comparable to if she would go somewhere and was told to leave her wheelchair behind.
