Marine biologist Bronwen Currie says the effect of fishing trawlers on the environment is incomparable to marine phosphate mining. Currie says phosphate mining would strip about three metres of the sea bottom including animals living there, while trawlers destroy only about 30 cm of the seabed’s surface.
