NAMWATER is likely to open the sluice gates of the Von Bach Dam tonight if the dam level reaches 100% capacity. Following good rains in its catchment areas, the dam now stands at over 90% full and if current conditions continue, it will soon reach capacity. There is a possibility that the dam will reach 100% capacity tonight or over the weekend. According to NAMWATER’s Corporate Communications manager John Shigwedha, the utility will be required to open the sluice gates, which would lead to flooding of the Swakop River. NAMWATER will be forced to open the gates towards the Swakop River, which flows into the Swakop Poort Dam and eventually into the Atlantic Ocean. As a precautionary measure, residents in the vicinity of the river are cautioned in advance about the opening of the sluice gates and should expect a flooded Swakop River.
