A fire broke out Northern Industrial area’s China Town in the capital this afternoon causing extensive damage to one of the buildings. The cause of the fire could not yet be confirmed and no deaths or injuries were recorded, according to City Police duty officer, superintendent Belinda Griqua. However, Griqua informed NBC News at the scene that they suspect an employee left a pot unattended which eventually caused the fire. Griqua’s speculations were supported by a shop assistant at one of the affected shops, Shikusho Matheus. Matheus said the fire indeed occurred after an employee at the shop next to theirs left a pot unattended. They then attempted to stop the fire without any success. Shop owners were trying to remove goods, including electrical appliances, furniture, alcohol and clothing items from the shops to avoid damage while firefighters tried to stop the blaze. Police at the scene were also trying to stop members of the public from looting the goods. The fire was brought under control approximately an hour after it was discovered.
