The level of the Oanob Dam outside Rehoboth is close to its capacity with town authorities and Namwater expecting it to reach full capacity during the course of today. A short while ago it was at 94,9% of its capacity with the dam still receiving inflows. The dam does not have sluices and has an automatic overflow, which releases water at full capacity. The water is released into the Oanob river at Rehoboth. The Rehoboth Town Council has, therefore, urged residents to stay away from the river and to remove animals in or near the river. Rehoboth Town Council spokesperson Desire Theunissen has also warned the Rehoboth community not to swim in the river as this poses a danger of drowning and exposure to waterborne diseases. Theunissen says parents and teachers should warn children about the dangers of swimming and playing in the river and stagnant water. Heavy rains across the country over the past week have led to significant inflows into most storage dams of Namibia after a prolonged drought.
