A high ranking officer in the Namibian Police was arrested in the early hours of this morning for driving under the influence of alcohol. The commissioner was arrested after he drove through a red traffic light in Florence Nightingale Street. Traffic officials who were on patrol reportedly tried to pull him off the road but the commissioner sped off, driving at 120 km/hr after noticing the officers. Traffic officers on duty managed to block him in Khomasdal. The officer refused an alcohol breathalyser test, to provide his driver’s licence as well as to comply with instructions by police officers. He also resisted arrest after making threats but was eventually taken to a hospital where the test was done. He is kept in the holding cells at Katutura Police Station and is expected to appear in court on Monday. He can therefore not yet be named. Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi confirmed the incident. Should the Commissioner pay bail of N$8 000 he’ll be released and appear in court on Monday.
