The election and swearing-in of office bearers of the Rundu Town Council have been postponed to Monday. Presiding magistrate Helen Olaiya could not proceed with the ceremony after councillors failed to elect a deputy mayor for a second time. Magistrate Olaiya went on to swear-in Isaak Kandingu as mayor following his election to that position last Friday. She postponed the swearing-in of the rest of the councillors to next Monday after the councillors did not nominate a deputy mayor. When the session resumed on Monday, following its postponement on Friday, Kandingu nominated Ralph Ihemba as deputy mayor. But the nomination was not seconded. Kandingu, Annastacia Shinduvi and Toini Hausiku defied the directive by Swapo Secretary-General Sophia Shanigwa to elect Verna Sinimbo mayor of the town. The Rundu Town Council now has four Swapo Party councillors, after Sinimbo’s resignation. All People’s Party’s councillor Mathew Wakudumo and Rundu Concerned Citizens’ Association’s Reginald Ndara complete the seven-member council. The council has been without office bearers since their term lapsed in December last year.
