The body of a 19-year-old boy who allegedly drowned was found floating in an earth dam at Ovikango village near Otjituuo in the Otjozondjupa Region on Tuesday. The spokesperson of the Namibian Police Force (NAMPOL) in the Otjozondjupa Region, Inspector Maureen Mbeha told NAMPA on Wednesday said that the deceased was identified by his relatives as Urikee Matundu. It is alleged that Matundu had gone out swimming with two friends aged 17 and 20 years on Monday afternoon, when he drowned. “Upon realising that Matundu was nowhere to be seen in the dam for a long time by his friends, the two stopped swimming, went back home and informed their elders,” Mbeha said. The police officer said the village elders launched a search on their own at the earth dam, but failed to find the body and that is when they informed the police around 15h30 on Monday. Matundu’s lifeless body was discovered floating in the water by community members on Tuesday and was retrieved. According to Mbeha, this is the fifth alleged drowning incident in the Otjozondjupa Region since January this year. She said people should refrain from swimming in the earth dams to avoid any loss of life. -NAMPA
