Namibia has been named as one of the 15 countries around the world that have seen a rapid decline in extreme poverty, according to an article published on the World Economic Forum (WEF) website. According to the report, in all these 15 countries, an average of 1,6% of the population moved out of extreme poverty every year between about 2000 and 2015. The 15 country list published on Monday also features Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia and Republic of Congo. This totals around 802 million fewer people living in extreme poverty during that period. It notes that four of the 15 countries, China, Kyrgyz Republic, Moldova and Vietnam managed to eradicate extreme poverty altogether. “By 2015 according to the most recent data 736 million people or about 10% of the world’s population, were living in extreme poverty, which the World Bank defines as living on the equivalent of US$1,90 or less per day (N$30,68), a decrease from 1,85 billion people in 1990,” the report stated. -NAMPA
