Concerned residents of the Groot Aub settlement has written to the Khomas rural constituency councillor’s office asking that water availability to the settelement be prolonged or opened daily, this is due to hygine measures put in place in light of COVID19. Currently, the residents say that the only working borehole at the time is not being operated consistently and that the residents are without water for most of the day. Khomas rural councillor for Groot Aub Penina Inga Iita explained that the resident’s concern is equally her concern, she explained that in 2019 five boreholes were drilled, of which only one was tested. Iita further stated in her texted response that the current situation at the settlement is aggravated by what she termed ‘some lawless’ residents who put up their houses blocking major services which delay effective implementation. City of Windhoek manager for corporate communications Harold Akwenye, however, informed NBC News that the settlement has three operational boreholes. “Two boreholes operate 20 hours per day. One of the boreholes has a recovery period of up to 4 hours per day. One borehole operates 24 hours” said Akwenye. Akwenye further says that additional boreholes have been drilled and that all necessary tests have been carried out he stated that NamPower will soon install supply of power. Currently, a lot of work is being done to ensure that at least one more borehole to is connected before the end of next week, this is in urgent response to COVID-19 concluded Akwenye.
