Mauritius confirmed its first COVID-19 death. A Belgian naturalised Mauritian who has lived in the country for more than a decade passed away due to the Coronavirus. The 52-year-old man was diabetic. The level of confinement has been raised according to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Khrishna Jhugroo as many Mauritians are not complying with instructions. Police said it would be uncompromising. Roadblocks will be more frequent and those who fail to respect that will be liable to fines and prison terms. A curfew could be considered if Mauritians do not cooperate. Jhugroo said, “from now on, we will be more strict. Operations will be stepped up and there will be more roadblocks. Vehicles are circulating although it is not allowed. Offenders will be prosecuted according to the law and regulations.” Dr Kailash Jagatpal also confirmed that at 11h30 this morning, 13 people had tested positive for Coronavirus. They are in isolation at the Souillac Hospital. 10 other people are also in isolation pending confirmation of the tests carried out. To date, Mauritius has equipped 15 quarantine centres considered as restricted areas where 721 people are under observation.
