Finance Ministry spokesperson, Tonateni Shidhudhu in an Interview on NBC News clarified that people who receive social grants on behalf of others such as vulnerable children and other relatives do not qualify for the Emergency Income Grant (EIG). So far 350 000 applicants have been verified and will receive payment on Tuesday. Shidhudhu said social grant beneficiaries should be patient and wait upon an appealing opportunity that will be provided through the regional council. He further clarified that all students do not qualify for the EIG. Tonateni warned applicants of scams and do not provide identity documents to people they do not trust, rather apply themselves. The Government remains committed to delivering on its promise of assisting the vulnerable during the COVID-19 lockdown.
