COVID-19 National Coordinator, Dr Bernhard Haufiku said there is a possibility of suspected local transmissions because the number of people tested is small to conclude that we do not have community transmission. He suspects that Namibia might have community transmissions and it’s just a matter of time before it’s discovered. Dr Haufiku said it will be a pleasant surprise if the country goes to June with no new Coronavirus positive cases. He added that it is also possible that Namibia does not have community transmission as the borders were closed in time. Dr Haufiku said he hopes the Namibia Institute of Pathology (NIP) will decentralise COVID-19 testing swiftly as it can become catastrophic if the pandemic grows with only centralised testing. According to Dr Haufiku, from a clinical case testing view, centralised testing has not worked elsewhere. Dr Petrus Mhata of the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Emergency Preparedness and Response Unit says Namibia must not relax because of no community transmission but try to improve the country doesn’t reach that scenario. He also said informal settlements with a lack of proper sanitation and access to water will find it difficult to handle the spread of the virus. He, therefore, emphasised the proper and necessary information dissemination. He was talking during the afternoon update at the COVID-19 Communication Centre.
