University of Namibia’s (UNAM) vice-chancellor, Professor Keneth Matengu elaborating on the High-Level Research Coordination task force (HILREC) said the task force is established to assist Government in its response to COVID-19 pandemic using data derived from research. Professor Matengu said HILREC will consider ways in which rapid tests and diagnostics for early detection and containment can be enhanced. He said the task force will investigate the possibility of developing technology that could warn people on their cellphones when they enter high-risk COVID-19 areas. “We all need to practise economic and social hygiene,” he said. It will also examine how data can be used to improve and fast track tracing and better case management, also analysing behaviour change on communication and the impact of COVID-19 on Namibia, among others. Professor Matengu said the pandemic calls for everyone to get involved. He said UNAM has started production of hand sanitisers that will be upscaled to 5 000 bottles per day by Monday. The vice-chancellor, who will be leading the task force, said there is need for government to provide funding to support the research activities and the budget so far requires over N$9,3 million. He made these remarks at the COVID-19 Communication Centre today.
