Several Emergency Income Grant (EIG) hopefuls are demonstrating in front of the Home Affairs office in Windhoek’s Northern Industrial Area demanding their identity documents. The demonstrators, who are shouting “down Home Affairs, down” want to apply for the EIG. “Our children are hungry and locked in the house while we run around looking for IDs,” said one irate demonstrator. They say Home Affairs officials are refusing to help them saying they are only helping people applying for birth and death certificates. They complain that they are stuck in Windhoek’s informal settlements, hungry and can’t go back to their region of origin because of the lockdown. The ministry’s spokesperson Sakeus Kadhikwa said staff will work around the clock as from today to print IDs. He said some Home Affairs employees returned to work to ensure IDs are done and given to them by the end of this month. He added that they are helping out with essential services such as issuing of birth certificates, death certificates and IDs for the EIG grant. The demonstrators have been gathering at the office for the last week. To mitigate the hardships brought about by the lockdown, to curb the spread of COVID-19, Government urged Namibians to apply for a once-off N$750.
