Executive Director of the Ministry of Health, Ben Nangombe said Namibia’s health infrastructure is ready for the pandemic. Nangombe pointed out that the Windhoek Central Hospital is under renovation, with an ICU facility for infectious and an isolation facility ready to be used. He added that more isolation facilities have been set up in Opuwo, Oshakati and more will be set up to ensure that we are ready to fight COVID-19. Regarding health workers’ protection, Nangombe said they are the tip of the spear. They have proper personal protective equipment and those who work at isolation and testing facilities do not go back to their families. They stay in isolation. Nangombe said the ministry, in partnership with other health facilities, ensured that those who need serious treatment from private hospitals, are treated there and the fund has been established to assist in treating all Namibians. Nangombe also said the lockdown has helped to upscale and expand mass testing, which will help them get the data they need. Thomas Mbeeli, Acting Director of the Health Technology and Infrastructure Management in the Ministry of Health said, “we have the capabilities to do surveillance of outbreaks, facilities which were used for malaria treatment, will be converted to isolation facilities.” Mbeeli said the ministry is looking at isolation facilities, to prepare them for nurses, adding that they have made arrangements to ensure water and electricity are available 24 hours with a backup. They were speaking during an update at the COVID-19 Communication Centre today.
