The Namibian Police Force (NAMPOL) in the Erongo Region arrested 26 people over the course of one week for breaking lockdown regulations. These statistics were provided by NamPol’s Erongo Regional Commander, Commissioner Andreas Nelumbu at a weekly media briefing platform here on Friday. According to Nelumbu, the different transgressions include offences such as facilitation of unauthorised gatherings during the lockdown, selling and utilising fake permits and operating informal trade and selling of alcohol, among others. “All these cases have amounted in N$52 000 in fines, with some cases having been sent to the Office of the Attorney General,” Nelumbu noted. He added that there is still a large number of people in communities who are failing to adhere to the lockdown regulations. “Some community members still do not understand the aim of the lockdown, the need for people to stay at home and the importance thereof. Most of these cases are substance-based. We will, however, continue to stay put in our policing zones until we have minimised movement in the region to ensure we avoid the spread of the virus,” Nelumbu stressed. The commissioner noted that other crimes such as gender-based violence, rape and housebreaking with intent to steal are still occurring, although such incidents have decreased during the lockdown period. “We hope that these cases remain as low as they are even beyond the lockdown,” he concluded.
