A bill to place better control on the Medical Aid Fund has been tabled in the National Assembly. The Medical Aid Fund Amendment Bill was tabled by Finance Deputy Minister Natangwe Ithete. It aims to move the function of policy supervision and oversight of medical aid funds from the Health and Social Services Ministry to that of Finance. This is to ensure financial soundness and management of medical aid funds The bill also aims to streamline the process of appeals and bring it in line with provisions set out in the Namibian Financial Institutions Supervisory Authority – Namfisa policies. It further imposes penalties of 20 000 dollars or three years imprisonment or both on persons who fail to comply with the provision of the Act. The Deputy Finance Minister also tabled amendments to the 1981 Unit Trust Control Act. The amendments are part of the implementation process of the Namfisa Act.
