The Harambee Prosperity Plan spells out improving agricultural output in communal areas to support Government efforts to ensure food security at household levels. That is exactly what a family of four at farm Constantia near Blouwes settlement in the //Karas region is doing. Moses Frederick Jacobs says he started the garden with his late father in the mid-80s, and he is convinced it has the potential to feed his family and sell a surplus to the neighbours. The family planted orange, lemon, mango and fig trees, and for the past four years they have harvested oranges. The Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry provided the trees, a gesture Jacobs appreciates. Jacobs said the main idea was adding lucerne production and vegetables which would be marketed to local and other farmers across Namibia. The land for lucerne has been fenced off and the family is pleading with the Agriculture Ministry and other stakeholders to assist. Jacobs said he would appreciate assistance in the form of vegetable and lucerne seeds as well as the provision of water.
