With the COVID-19 pandemic having the world at a standstill, one of the measures that the Government has taken to help curb the infection rate was to stop the sale of alcohol, to practice social distancing. This includes closure of most work environments, shopping malls, bars and public places. The Government ban on the sale of alcoholic beverages during the lockdown is to help minimise social contact as well as risky behaviour. Ellen Nghikembua, a psychological counsellor at Sinkala Psychology, however, says that going for days without alcohol for those who are struggling with alcohol addiction can be life-threatening, thus leading to depression, anxiety, aggression and in some cases suicide. “Addiction is a chronic brain disorder that can have devastating effects,” according to Nghikembua. People who go “cold turkey” experience withdrawal symptoms such as tremors, high blood pressure, confusion, vomiting, nausea, sweating, seizures, heart failure, dehydration, fever and hallucinations,” she said. Nghikembua further says that people who drink for leisure or those who binge drink can experience similar symptoms such as anxiety, irritability and headaches although not at the same extent as those who are addicted. “The sudden stoppage for alcoholics can have an impact on domestic violence,” said Nghikembua. The frustration of not being able to drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes many people become easily agitated, aggressive and violent. The psychological counsellor advises those who find themselves in this situation to try and keep busy. Meanwhile, Roché Locke O Group Communication spokesperson informed NBC News that NBL was not considered to be providing essential services and that as such, Namibian Breweries ceased operations at midnight on 27 March 2020 as it is not permitted to continue with its normal business operations. Locke further said that the stoppage of production of beer will have a financial impact on NBL and its volumes. “NBL will assess all implications once normal business operations recommence,” said Locke. She maintained that at this time, there is no bigger priority than to be part in the fight against COVID-19 and finding ways and means to support public health.
