All Namibians in Turkey are reportedly safe, following a failed coup attempt in which more than 200 people were killed. An eight-member delegation led by Namibian Ambassador to France, Frieda Ithete, were in Turkey. The delegation stayed in a hotel opposite the scene where clashes took place and could see people being shot dead on the streets. Ithete described the attacks as scary, as they could see glasses scattering from the building opposite their hotel. The diplomat confirmed that the only Namibian living in that country was safe, following the failed coup d’Etat. More than 2 839 soldiers are being detained on suspicion of involvement.
