The Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, Chief Samuel Ankama, has proposed the re-introduction of vocational subjects as part of the school curriculum. Ankama explained that many children graduate from high school without knowing simple skills. He said such skills are: how to construct a hut and make pottery as well as traditional baskets to be able to survive adult life. Contributing to the debate on the Basic Education Bill in the National Assembly, Ankama argued that school-leavers nowadays have no workable skills, making it difficult to gain any kind of job or earn a living. The deputy minister said in some cultures, learners have indigenous knowledge and vocational training to impart such knowledge. Ankama said that will enhance skills and promote value-addition to cultural products, as pupils can improve the making of products. He said pottery and other hand-made products can be introduced at schools, giving learners practical skills that can help them in the future.
