The African Union, AU, has donated about 1,3 million dollars to the Namibian government to assist drought-affected communities. Namibia is suffering from persistent drought, due to poor rainfall received over the past-three years. More than 700 000 people in the country have been affected by drought, with about 600 000 living in rural areas. A delegation from the African Union headed by Permanent Representative of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic to the AU, Ambassador Lamine Yahiaoui, is in the country to assess the impact the disaster is having on the Namibian people. The delegation paid a courtesy visit to Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila today. Kuugongelwa-Amadhila commended the delegation for assisting the Namibian government during this period of drought. Namibia needs more than 600-million dollars to assist citizens affected by the drought. The government had availed 300-million dollars from the disaster risk management budget to affected communities. The money is aimed at addressing hunger, providing seeds and livestock assistance in the affected communities.
