Botswana has urged the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Joseph Kabila, to step down. The Foreign Affairs Ministry says the situation in the DRC is particularly bad, because its leader has persistently delayed holding elections and has lost control over national security. Government troops have clashed with opposition supporters, following President Kabila’s refusal to leave office. Kabila took power in 2001 after his father’s assassination and had been expected to step down in 2016. He has, however, revoked two deals to leave office. Another agreement has been set for December this year, as the deadline for Kabila to hand over power, but opposition supporters suspect that he will not.
