It is only through growth in the economy that new businesses and more jobs can be created. Max Hamata, the managing director of Max Media Printers is no stranger to Namibia’s media landscape both as an investigative reporter and an owner of a newspaper. Hamata, the owner of the new state of the art printing press says printing is a very expensive operation involving large quantities of consumables such as newspapers, as well as school text books among others. The company that was established at a cost of more than N$28 million employs 45 unskilled workers, who are mostly women, and 13 skilled professionals. He says the initiative is to complement government efforts to reduce unemployment. Hamata, who also owns the Confidente newspaper says owners of newspapers, especially new entrants struggle to cope with printing costs.
