Despite having recorded a slight decrease in poaching in 2016, the number of animals killed so far, in particular rhino and elephant, raises concern. The large animal species – rhinos and elephants, continue to suffer at the hands of poachers, through illegal hunting in different corners of Namibia.
Despite tourism being a lucrative business in the Kunene Region, the local population, particularly the OvaHimba, hardly benefit from it. The OvaHimba are the main tourist attraction in the Kunene region. The lion’s share from tourism related revenue goes to lodge owners and tour guides.
The National Council is still waiting from the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development to consider the proposed Bill aimed at introducing a Constituency Development Fund. The bill was the initiative of the National Council in 2015 to provide funds to Regional Councillors to implement developments in their respective constituencies.
