Most young Namibians south of the Red Line were not only subjected to Bantu education but were also forcibly conscripted into the South African war machinery to fight Swapo militarily. Many of these youth were staunch members of Swapo and refused to serve in the army but their decisions had serious consequences on their future job or educational prospects. Simeon ‘Ou Tim’ Christiaans was one such youth who was at the JA Nel Secondary School at Keetmanshoop at the time, together with three others, who refused to join the army despite being conscripted. He called on Government to seriously look into the criteria used to declare people as liberation veterans, noting that the system appears flawed with people deserving the status being left out.
