The construction of the Husab Uranium Mine about 60 Kilometres outside Walvis Bay in the Erongo Region has been completed. But upgrades to the desalination plant, which provides water to the mine is expected to hamper the commissioning of the plant during this quarter. The mine’s Chief Executive Officer, Zheng Keping informed Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila during her visit to the mine on Friday. Despite the water provision set back, Kuugongelwa-Amadhila was impressed with the mines’ progress and massive investment in skills development and accommodation facilities for employees. She said the cost incurred by the mine would be recovered from improved productivity because the employees worked in a conducive environment. Husab Uranium’s procurement system further promotes Namibian companies especially those owned by women while 10% of the mine’s employees are female. The mine is a 2 billion US dollar investment by Chinese company Guangdong Nuclear Power Holding. It is expected to contribute 5% to Namibia’s Gross Domestic Product. Once the mine starts producing uranium, the country will become the third largest uranium producer in the world.
