A group of cattle farmers in the Zambezi Region has threatened to act against cattle rustlers if law enforcement agencies do not stop cattle theft. The group’s threat follows theft of 18 heads of cattle stolen from the region last week, and recovered subsequently in neighbouring Zambia. Five Zambian suspects allegedly stole the cattle from Lusese in Kabbe North and herded them across the border to Zambia. Chairperson of the Zambezi Cattle Farmers, Kamwi Sezuni, has encouraged livestock farmers in the region to unite and find a solution. The farmers have appealed for deployment of Namibian Defence Force soldiers along the common border, to prevent cross-border theft of livestock. Namibian Police Regional Crime Investigations Co-ordinator for Zambezi Region, Evans Simasiku, has applauded his Zambian counterparts, for arresting three of the five suspects. Simasiku has told NBC News that residents depend on livestock for their livelihood and the police will not allow stock theft to destroy this source of livelihood.
