The much anticipated N$190 million Peugeot assembly plant has been dealt a blow after Customs officials impounded its first consignment in Walvis Bay. The Industrialisation, Trade and SME Development Minister said customs wanted to impose a levy but he opposed the move as the benefit of the plant to the country exceeds the levy. Tjekero Tweya said he was informed by customs that the machinery could not be released because the Peugeot warehouse, where it was intended to go, is incomplete. The deal involves Government, which holds 51% equity through the Namibia Development Corporation (NDC).
