The Editors’ Forum of Namibia (EFN) has condemned the publication of murder suspect Ivan Pitt hanging from a ceiling. The picture was published online by a weekly newspaper, Informanté. The EFN says although the paper is not a signed up member of the forum, the graphic content constitutes unethical, insensitive journalism and could bring the Namibian media into disrepute. It also believes that the only aim was to sensationalise the breaking news, gain more clicks and was not done in the public interest or to raise awareness. The statement says irrespective of what the deceased allegedly did, he was a father, son and family member to those close to him. EFN reminded the media house of the Code of Ethics and conduct which call on both print and electronic media to exercise care and consideration in matter involving the private lives of an individual. Informanté’s post did not give care and consideration and neither was a prominent warning given that the content is graphic and inappropriate for certain audiences, according to the statement.
