The Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture in consultation with its stakeholders and as per the Cabinet endorsement has announced the reopening of schools and subsequent resumption of face-to-face teaching and learning of learners in all schools for the remainder of 2020 academic year. The first phase is for the resumption of face-to-face schooling for Grades 11 and 12 on 3 June. Phase two is the resumption of face-to-face for pre-primary to Grade 3 on 22 June. Schools will close on 18 December 2020 for all grades. The third phase is the resumption of face-to-face for Grades 7 and 9 on 6 July. The last phase (Phase 4) is the resumption of face-to-face for Grades 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10 on 20 July. The ministry noted that a mid-term break for teachers is scheduled from 22 to 29 May 2020, with returning to school on 1 June 2020. Steenkamp in a media statement said the revised school calendar with the ministerial guidelines on the re-opening of schools will still be communicated. The Education Ministry and other stakeholders emphasised that all resources will be made available at everyone’s disposal to ensure that the safety of learners is prioritised and ensured at the school.
