Former Minister of Fisheries, Bernhard Esau was released from detention after judge Hanellie Prinsloo declared his arrest warrant invalid. Esau approached the High Court Sunday morning on an urgent basis to declare the warrant of arrest under which he was detained at the Otjomuise Police Station invalid. The former minister was arrested in Windhoek on Saturday. Esau’s lawyers argued in court that there was no indication on the arrest warrant under which law he was arrested. The former minister is being investigated for corruption, bribery and money laundering, among others, and an arrest warrant was issued against him and another suspect charged with him. However, Esau’s lawyers and the State reached a settlement agreement, which declared the warrant invalid. The Commander of the Otjomuise Police Station, where Esau was held, was also ordered to release him.
