A horrific accident happened along the Windhoek western bypass Monday afternoon. The incident involved four cars and claimed the life of a taxi driver. The taxi driver died instantly, while four passengers, who were three school boys and one girl, sustained serious injuries. The second vehicle involved in the accident, a Toyota bakkie, flew some distance and landed about 50 metres off the road. The driver of the bakkie sustained slight injuries, but his passengers – also three school children, sustained serious injuries and were taken to hospital. A third vehicle, a Mercedes-Benz, was slung a few metres off the road, with the driver and two passengers sustaining serious injuries. The driver and passenger of the fourth vehicle, a Polo, did not sustain any injuries. Police assume that the driver of the Toyota bakkie had attempted to overtake the Polo, but that he lost control and ended up involving two more vehicles in the accident. City Police Public Relations Officer Constable Edmund Khoaseb, cautions drivers to be mindful of their speed and their driving distance at all times.
