President Hage Geingob today declared, “As long as I am President of Namibia the freedom of the press is guaranteed.” UNESCO, in partnership with the Editor’s Forum of Namibia, the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology and media houses are celebrating World Press Freedom Day in Windhoek. The celebration also saw the launch of the revised EFN Code of Ethics by President Hage Geingob. Geingob said media are the windows of the Namibian house. “We want our media to be the freest in the world,” he said. The President however warned that “journalists should not be attack dogs or lap dogs, they should be watchdogs.” Namibia is rated first in Africa and dropped to number 24, from 17th, on The 2017 World Press Freedom Index compiled by Reporters Without Borders (RSF).
