The Government has exceeded its target of creating 90 000 jobs under the Fourth National Development Plan (NDP4) over the last four years. Statistics presented by the National Planning Commission, NPC, at Swakopmund on Thursday show that 110 000 employment opportunities were created. In addition, 70% of poor and vulnerable citizens receive government grants, including finance and food. Economic Planning Minister, Tom Alweendo, was speaking at the Erongo Regional Consultation meeting on the Fifth National Development Plan. The economy grew from 5,7% to 6% during the NDP4 period. Alweendo told Nampa that Namibia was now a better place to live in compared to what it was before and in the early years of independence. He said this was because the government managed to create jobs, grow the economy and take people out of poverty. However, the minister said more needed to be done to achieve faster economic growth and create more jobs.
