Health Minister Dr Kalumbi Shangula has warned that the worst may still come a month after Namibia confirmed its first COVID-19 case. Shangula said Namibians should not rest on their laurels in their efforts to flatten the curve and mitigate the spread of Coronavirus. He said his ministry will test as many people as possible. Shangula pointed out that the purpose of the extended lockdown is to suppress transmission. According to Shangula, the global scarcity of reagents used in the testing of COVID-19 and the unavailability of transport compromise the testing capacity of the Namibia Institute of Pathology (NIP). However, efforts will be made to test more people than before. He added that rapid testing is not reliable. He said the extension of the lockdown “will limit the public’s freedom of movement but the goal is to ensure that each confirmed case infect less than one person in other regions.” The minister said they have put up strategies to increase monitoring and surveillance. He reiterated his call to the Namibians, to comply with measures put in place to curb the spread of the virus. “COVID-19 does not go out looking for people. It is people looking for the virus even if they don’t know,” he said. The solution is to stay at home. The minister said this during an update at the COVID-19 Communication Centre this morning.
