Members of the Homeless People’s Parliament received their birth certificates and identification documents. The first ‘Homeless People’s Parliament’ was launched by National Council in April this year, to give homeless Namibians a platform to discuss issues affecting them, and make suggestions to address homelessness. The 31-members, who represent the homeless community, wanted a change in society’s attitude towards the homeless, especially at places like health centres and police stations. Many of them had lost their birth certificates, and have not been able to obtain identity documents since turning 16. Some members’ births were never registered, which made life difficult for them. The National Council’s Chairperson Magreth Mensah-Williams, who initiated the platform says people who are homeless and without national documents, face a number of challenges. She encourages recipients of national documents to use them to find work and enrol their children at schools.
