The Patriot Namibia newspaper and the Namibia Central Intelligence Service on Thursday agreed that the newspaper will, for now, not publish an article concerning the intelligence service in Friday’s edition. The intelligence service lodged an urgent application in the High Court Thursday afternoon in which they call on the weekly not to publish a story and only do so after the court has heard arguments why the story should not see the light of day. The Patriot was investigating a story about land and properties the Intelligence Service has acquired. The application was presumably made on the basis that the publication of a story around the acquisition of these properties may compromise security. The newspaper sent questions to the intelligence service about its investigation to give them an opportunity to share their side of the story. While awaiting the answers, the Patriot received High Court summonses as the intelligence service has approached the court, on an urgent basis, to prevent publication of the story. The parties agreed to present their heads of argument to the High Court next week after which the court will pronounce itself on Friday whether the story should be published or not.
