The GK Wahl Combined School, at Kalkfeld in the Otjozondjupa Region, has awarded its 2017 Junior Secondary Certificate best performers. Twenty-four learners were rewarded for hard work, including nine teachers, who received money as motivation. The event was attended by Disability Affairs Deputy Minister, Alexcia Manombe-Ncube, who said despite lack of educational materials and tools, the school continues to improve on its regional ranking. Manombe-Ncube said the school ranks tenth out of 25 secondary schools in the region. In 2016, the GK Wahl Combined School reported a pass percentage of 65,7 and in 2017 it was 70%. Last year, 34 learners sat for the Grade 10 examinations, of whom 24 passed to proceed to Grade 11. Allantinus Gurirab is the top achiever of 2017 after attaining 41 points. He is followed by Bjorn Haragaeb with 38 points, while third place was occupied by Jenneth Kamuhomise and Shalom Kamatoto with 33 points each. The community school was built in 1944 and later extended to a junior secondary in 1994, to accommodate pre-primary to Grade 10 learners. It has 413 learners and 14 teachers.
