The RDP Secretary-General has asked the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Constitutional and Legal Affairs to revisit a petition by former fighters with the South African forces. Mike Kavekotora said the committee appeared to have been hell-bent on ignoring the plight of Namibians, who served under the South African Apartheid forces. He noted that he did not condone atrocities these former fighters, including members of Koevoet perpetrate on fellow Namibians, before stressing that opposing forces committed atrocities against Namibians in their ranks. Kavekotora said the report by the standing committee on the demands of the Namibia War Veterans Trust was misplaced and lacked seriousness. The veterans asked the committee a week ago, to be recognised as war veterans. Namvet leader Frans Ndeunyema said the Veterans Act, Act No 2 of 2008, is illegal and contravenes the Namibian Constitution. But committee chairperson, Sebastian Karupu, reported to Parliament that the committee had found that these former soldiers do not qualify to be recognised as war veterans.
