The Keetmanshoop municipal council has decided at its council meeting on Tuesday to enter into a new contract with the Southern Electricity Company to supply electricity to residents for another six months. This is despite the towns community having expressed disappointment at the decision to enter into the contract with SELCO. Last week, young people joined by community members of Keetmanshoop staged a peaceful demonstration and handed over a petition to the municipality. They want SELCO, which has been supplying electricity to the town for over 15 years, to be given the boot. But the municipality, which intended to take over the supply of electricity when the SELCO contract ended in October, does not have the capacity to supply electricity to the residents at the moment. The Keetmanshoop Municipal Council resolved to appoint a steering committee consisting of members from the Keetmanshoop municipality and SELCO to conclude the contract and the transition process.
