SWAPO won the Katima Mulilo urban constituency by-election that were conducted 25 August, retaining its seat left by John Mukaya who passed away in June 2021 in a car accident. SWAPO’s candidate Kennedy Simasiku received half of the votes gaining 1,557 out 3002 total votes cast. Simasiku was followed by Independent Candidate (IC) Gibson Nkando who received 417 votes. Another independent candidate, Poniso Kubwima received 156 votes. The Katima Urban Constituency had 14,262 registered voters. Simasiku was victorious at most polling stations which were 20 in total. It is not yet known whether Simasiku will replace late Mukaya as a Member of Parliament in the National Council. Four political parties, South-West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO), Popular Democratic Movement (PDM), Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) and National Democratic Party (NDP) with two non partisan politicians contested the Katima Mulilo by- election.
