The Executive Director in the Ministry of Labour, Bro-Mathew Shinguadja and advocate Vicki ya Toivo, Special Advisor in the Ministry of Labour, this morning deliberated on how COVID-19 is affecting the labour market. Shinguadja said the rights of those doing essential and critical jobs are still intact when it comes to their protection against COVID-19. Advocate Ya Toivo called on employers to not terminate their employees’ contracts, adding that retrenchments are not desirable at this time but to rather wait for operations to resume. She also said if employees feel unsafe at their places of work they can stay away provided they have followed all the reasonable steps to do. She further said not everyone has an understanding that they are supposed to assist in this pandemic, some employers are taking it for granted. The two spoke at the COVID-19 Communication Centre this morning.
