The Constitutional Court in Malawi has nullified the 21 May 2019 Presidential elections and has called for fresh elections. The the court determined that fresh elections should be held within 150 days, and it has determined that these elections consider 50+1 voting system. On costs, the court has determined that the second respondent, which is the Malawi Electoral Commission, should pay costs to petitioners. The May vote returned sitting President Peter Mutharika to power, sparking widespread protests by the opposition, who said the polls were rigged. The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has defended its handling of the vote as being in keeping with the law.
