Forty two thousand Namibians who tested HIV positive have not registered to get anti-retroviral therapy to suppress the virus and stop the progression of the pandemic. Health and Social Service Deputy Minister, Juliet Kavetuna says, Namibia is a champion in the world and the continent in providing free Anti-retroviral Therapy to people living with HIV to prolong their lives. She says many people living with HIV in other countries struggle to get ART, because they are expected to carry part of the medications’ cost. Kavetuna says the government puts more effort into ensuring that ART is readily available at health facilities free of charge. The deputy minister expressed disappointment that after testing HIV positive, some people disappeared without registering for anti-retroviral treatment. Kavetuna said Namibia allowed a guideline of testing and treatment, but this was hampered by people who were ignorant about their own health. She is concerned that teenagers do not use available contraceptives at public health facilities, leading to pregnancy and dropping out of school. The deputy minister was speaking at Eenhana in the Ohangwena Region at the launch of Teach One, One Teach All project.
