The Meat Corporation of Namibia (Meatco) has so far fulfilled its export quota to the Norway and Hong Kong markets. After delivering its initial quota of 1 200 tonnes for the Norwegian market this year, the company managed to add an additional 400-tonnes. In September, Meatco shipped its first consignment of close to 24 000 kilograms of beef to the Hong Kong market. In an interview with NBC News today, Meatco’s Corporate Affairs Manager, Rosa Hamukuaja-Tobias, described this as major achievements in the company’s drive to diversify its markets. Meatco is now in the process of labeling its meat products, destined for the United States. It is waiting for approval from the Directorate of Veterinary Services before export to this market can start. Hamukuaja-Tobias believes this development will have a positive effect on Namibia’s economic growth, while benefiting farmers directly. Namibia currently produces 60 000 metric tonnes of beef products annually, of which 20 000 metric tonnes are exported to South Africa and the European Union.
